Anyone who, as part of their working duties, is involved in the selection, inspection and use of abrasive wheels in the workplace.

  • Overview of health and safety legislation including:
    – Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974
    – Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998
    – Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 – Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992
  • Hazards, risks and risk control measures including contact, wheel burst, noise, respiratory and HAVS hazards
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Types of abrasive wheel machines and their safe use
  • Resin and vitrified bonded abrasive wheel selection, identification and inspection – types 1, 27, 41 and 42 (including non-live practical exercise)
  • Correct use, setting, adjustment and inspection of flanges, guards and accessories
  • Pre-use machine safety checks (including non-live practical exercise)
  • How to mount abrasive wheels on angle grinders, chop saws, disc cutters, bench and pedestal grinders (including non-live practical exercise)
  • How to true, dress and balance vitrified abrasive wheels on bench and pedestal grinders (including non-live practical exercise)
  • Live instruction and assessment of pre-use inspection, wheel inspection, mounting, PPE selection and safe use of abrasive wheels on a selection of abrasive wheel machines cutting and grinding a range of materials.
